Hygiene standards in piercing and tattoo studios should be on the highest level, because we're talking about procedures that come into direct contact with blood. Unfortunately, since there are no schools for piercing and tattooing, these professions aren't regulated by the government so no hygiene minimum needs to be legally maintained.

All equipment used during piercing or tattooing needs to be on a one-time basis or sterile. Tools that aren't disposable (single use) need to be cleaned after every use (by hand or using ultrasonic cleaner), disinfected, protected with anti-corrosive (same one used for surgical tools), packed into sterilization bags and sterilized.
After the sterilization, packed tools are stored in a clean and dry place, with no contamination or package damage risk, and are to be opened right before use.
Sterilization is done using autoclave (steam sterilizer) - 2 bar pressure, 134°C temperature, for 30 minutes. This is the only adequate type of sterilization to be used in hospitals, and in tattoo/piercing studios as well.
In Octopus we use an Italian brand of autoclave Newmed, model Kronos B23. Each sterilization is tested through indicators on sterilization bags - changing color from pink to brown when done properly. During the sterilization cycle, this model of autoclave prints the report on sterilization (you can download the example on the link). Also, once a year we test the autoclave by sterilizing bacterial spore from Andrija Štampar Institute for Public Health. Autoclave attest can
be downloaded on the link.

More on materials can be read in the part Piercingpedia - Materials.
Initial jewelry is autoclave-sterilised. For changing the jewelry on an already healed piercing the piece needs to be disinfected, but not sterile.
